Today’s Schedule:
• Introductions
• Website Tour & Syllabus
Looking ahead:
Assignments
• Read – http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/11/emojis-rapid-evolution.html
• Create – a WAM blog and post the link to Canvas, before next class (12:30PM, Thursday 1/23/25) for participation

Blog Setup Directions
[As stated in the Syllabus]:
Individual Course Blog – You will need to create a blog. You may choose your web platform (i.e. Squarespace, Weebly, WordPress, Medium, Wix, Adobe Portfolio/Behance, or other free open-source design picks like the options featured in the following link – https://www.creativebloq.com/web-design/best-blogging-platforms-121413634 ).
The blog is a space for you to wrestle with ideas and meanings in the course content, raise your own questions, and investigate your own interests around multimodality and writing across media. Plan to create at least 8 posts (300-500 words each) over the course of the semester. While you are encouraged to create posts as frequently as you wish, and to use this space as process journal, the class schedule will have reminders for formal posting dates/requirements. Your blog’s address/streaming link will be attached to the course blogroll and will be public to me and your classmates. Post accordingly.
NOTE: Blog prompts, along with their specified due dates, can be found on your course calendar.
Here’s a link to help you set up a blog (on WordPress): https://wordpress.com/start/about You should not have to pay for the service. Double check that you’re not creating a new domain and choose a free theme to design your blog.
Here are some links that may be helpful to create your first blog:
• “Emojipedia”, online resource for emojis ( https://emojipedia.org/ )
• Giphy, online resource for gifs ( https://giphy.com/ )
• Adobe Express ( https://express.adobe.com/ )
• NOTE: Don’t be afraid to experiment with your phone apps and then transfer the
material
Happy blogging!

Notes from Sternbergh’s "The Rapid Evolution of Emoji…" Piece (Class 1/23/25)

After reading the Emoji piece, consider these two “Bitmoji and Resumes” articles that demonstrate larger conversations debating appropriate rhetorical moves and context. How do Bitmoji’s and Emoji’s function in comparison to each other?
